Why the ocean borrows the sky color
It is a popular myth that the ocean is blue just because it is acting like a giant mirror reflecting the sky. While the water can catch the clouds and blue overhead, the real magic happens inside the water itself. Water molecules are great at absorbing warm colors like red and yellow from sunlight, but they let blue light bounce around and scatter back out to your eyes. In fact, if you scoop up ocean water in a clear glass bottle, it looks completely transparent. The gorgeous blue color only shows up when light gets to travel through miles and miles of it.
