Cats That Cannot Purr No Matter What
Not every cat has the biological hardware to purr. Big cats like lions, tigers, jaguars, and leopards roar instead. Inside their throats, a special stretchy bone called the hyoid is replaced by a flexible ligament. This stretchy band lets their voice box stretch out, creating a massive, window-rattling roar that can travel up to two miles. But because that ligament is so loose, it cannot vibrate continuously to make the cozy motor sound of a housecat. You either get a bone that makes a purr or a ligament that makes a roar, but nature rarely lets a cat do both.
